A Bookshelf serves as a decoration or a very inefficient furnace fuel. Bookshelves naturally occur in "libraries" inside strongholds, and NPC villages.
Breaking a bookshelf will drop 3 books currently. This used to only occur if the block was broken by an explosion, but has been fixed since the 1.9 pre-release. A single bookshelf can be crafted by arranging three wooden planks, one in each square, across the top and bottom rows, and three books in the middle row.

If bookshelves are placed near a enchantment table, it allows the player to make stronger enchantments.
