Cooking (WIS)[]

The Cooking Skill is used to make meals which offer an array of bonuses to those who eat them, as well as determining if a meal has been poisoned.

Check[]

You can feed yourself and others special meals, which offer small effects, either in the wild or in civilization. You can also use your knowledge of the culinary arts to determine if a meal has been poisoned, without greatly endangering yourself. The DC to determine if a meal has been poisoned is 20, while the DC to prepare a special meal varies by the dish.

Preparing a Meal[]

A Cooking Skill check made to prepare a meal takes 1-4 hours, depending on the type of meal being prepared. The DC of the meal must be met or exceeded or the meal may be ruined (see DC Modifier). Individual meals may be sold (as long as they are fresh) at appropriate venues. There are two types of meal, simple meals and complex meals. Simple Meals take only an hour to prepare and make while Complex Meals take 1d4 hours to prepare and cook, with certain higher tier dishes requiring more time. Attempting to prepare a meal without Herbs & Spices imposes a -2 circ*mstance penalty on the check. If you use Masterwork Herbs & Spices, you gain a +2 circ*mstance bonus on the check.

Meal Qualities[]

Cooking Skill (1)

Quality[]

  • This is the quality of the meal, which determines the potency of the different effects a meal may have as well as the price. Meals prepared in poor conditions have a max quality of bad, average conditions have a max quality of average, and good conditions have a max quality of good. Higher quality meals require specialized areas to prepare, and such meals might be obtained at high end restaurants, royal courts, or special events.

DC Modifier[]

  • All meals have a base DC to prepare, but the quality is determined by how well you exceed (or how far you fall short of meeting) the DC. If you fail to prepare even a horrifyingly bad meal, it is completely inedible and offers no effects.

Effect Modifier[]

  • All meals grant a minor bonus (often +1 to a certain skill) but depending on the quality of the meal that bonus may be amplified. Multiply the effect of the meal by the effect modifier to determine the bonus.

Price Modifier[]

  • All meals have a base price, but the quality can modify this value.

Flavors[]

Different people enjoy different flavors. A person may enjoy any number of flavors, but may only have one favorite flavor. If a character eats a meal of their favorite flavor, they become Sated for the next 8 hours. A player may roll 1d12 to determine a random flavor, if they do not decide one themselves.

Cooking Skill (2)

Textures[]

In the culinary world food does not only have flavors and aromas, but also textures. Listed below are the basic textures of food someone might run into. A person may enjoy any number of textures, but may only have one favorite texture. If a character eats a meal of both their favorite flavor and texture, their Sated bonus is doubled for the next 8 hours. A player may roll 1d12 to determine a random texture, if they do not decide one themselves.

Cooking Skill (3)

Action[]

Varies. A single Cooking check may represent activity over the course of hours or even a full week. A Cooking check made to determine if a meal is poisoned is at least a full-round action.

Try Again[]

No. If you fail a Cooking check and ruin the meal, you may not try again on the same meal. You may attempt a new Cooking check on a new meal if desired, which will require new ingredients.

Special[]

Elves and half-elves gain a +2 racial bonus on Cooking checks. You may use Cooking in place of a Profession check to earn money.

Synergy[]

If you have 5 or more ranks in a culinary oriented Profession, you get a +2 bonus on Cooking checks. If you have 5 or more ranks in Survival, you get a +2 bonus on Cooking checks.

Untrained[]

While meals may be prepared and made untrained, the special benefits granted by the meals can only be done by a trained cook. Without the proper feats, a character can only prepare meals from Animals, Plants, and Vermin.
