Abstract

Analyzing the leadership traits of past great leaders through the lens of a modern leadership model is vital to those who wish to improve their own leadership abilities. The Full-Range Leadership model is a detailed assessment of leadership styles perfect for this sort of analysis. This presentation uses the Full-Range Leadership Model to examine the leadership styles of George Washington (1732-1799), in both military and political contexts. All aspects of The Full-Range Leadership model will be touched on, but emphasis will be placed on transformational leadership styles, which Washington favored. This presentation will highlight examples of Washington displaying the different forms of leadership in famous historical events, detailing upon how his leadership affected those around him and ultimately changed history. Washington utilized transformational leadership styles such as Inspirational Motivation with his speeches, bolstering the willpower of those who followed him. Washington also utilized in the Valley Forge with his care for the well-being of his troops, as shown by the letter he sent to the Convention of New Hampshire requesting clothing and food for them. Washington is best known for his use of Idealized Influence, he held himself to high standards and emphasized morality in all things. In short, this presentation will analyze the leadership of George Washington through the Full-Range Leadership Model, to help educate others on the attributes of good leadership, and how they can embody them.
