In 1985, after The NeverEnding Story was finished being filmed, the original Falkor was moved into the Bavaria Movie Studios Museum where he is currently on public display.

Falkor's name in the original German novel is “Fuchur” which was apparently derived from the Japanese word f*ckuryū. f*cku meaning “happiness, luck” and Ryū meaning “dragon”. And so we have Falkor being the luckdragon in Fantastica. But f*ckuryū has been mentioned as meaning “hidden dragon” or “crouching dragon” as well.

Artax is Atreyu's best friend, and they go in search for a cure for the Childlike Empress in the Never Ending Story. Artax dies in the Swamp of Sadness, but is brought back to life when Bastian re-creates Fantasia.

When Atreyu is in the Swamps of Sadness with his horse, the horse sinks because it gives into the sadness, but Atreyu doesn't sink, even though he is crying and sad that his friend has died. Though not properly shown in the movie, the book explains how AURYN is protecting him.

Unfortunately, as one passes through said swamp they are taken over by depressive thoughts and hopelessness. Though Atreyu is at least partially protected by an amulet, Artex the horse succumbs to despair and begins to sink slowly into the mud.

Noah Hathaway, who played Atreyu in the 'NeverEnding Story' films, is still plagued by a spinal injury from film rehearsals over 30 years ago that cost him nearly $1 million in surgeries.

It was an utterly devastating scene, one that wrecked a generation of '80s kids.
