Ireland’s Favourite Colour is… Blue! (2)

When anyone mentions Ireland, we immediately think of green landscapes (the sheer mass of greenery across the country is the reason why Ireland is called The ‘Emerald Isle’), leprechauns and shamrocks. Saint Patrick actually used the shamrock to explain the Holy Trinity to pagans, explaining that it represented the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit, who were separate entities, yet one in the same. This is why it became customary to wear green clothes, accessories and shamrocks in celebrating St. Patrick’s Day. So even with all this green iconography, blue is the favourite colour of the Emerald Isle!

We’ve got this intel from G . F Smith’s quest to find the World’s Favourite Colour in January 2017. The results of which will be announced at their Paper City installation at Hull City of Culture on 1st July 2017. With St. Patrick’s Day being today, we looked at some of the early submission data from Ireland, and blue is the colour that seems to be most favoured in the land of green.

What you might not be aware of is that blue was, in fact, the original national colour of Ireland. St. Patrick’s blue is the name applied to several shades of blue associated with Saint Patrick and Ireland. While green is now the usual colour that represents Ireland, St. Patrick’s blue is still the official colour of the state.
