How will Netflix know who is in your household? ›

How Netflix detects devices within a Netflix Household. We use information such as IP addresses, device IDs, and account activity to determine whether a device signed into your account is part of your Netflix Household. We do not collect GPS data to try to determine the precise physical location of your devices.

A Netflix account is meant to be shared by people who live together in one household. People who are not in your household will need to sign up for their own account to watch Netflix. You can manage who uses your account by setting a Netflix Household.

You can change an extra member at any time, up to 2 times per billing period. Once changed, the current extra member will lose access to Netflix immediately.

Under Netflix's updated password-sharing rules, it's fine for multiple people to use and share one account, provided they all live together. So if you're a family or a friendship group that lives together under the same roof your viewing won't be affected. You can keep sharing your account as one household.

This message means Netflix wasn't able to associate your device with your Netflix Household. If you're using a device that's not associated with the Netflix Household, please create your own account to enjoy Netflix.

Account owners on a Standard or Premium plan in many countries can share Netflix with someone who doesn't live with them by adding an extra member to their account. The account owner will need to purchase an extra member slot, then invite an extra member to use the extra member slot.

In addition to IP tracking, Netflix also monitors the unique IDs of devices used to access the service. An unusually high number of different devices logging into the same account can be a red flag for password sharing.

As long as all the people you share the password with live in the same household as you, you're not in violation of Netflix's terms of service. However, if you're sharing your password with someone who lives somewhere else, there's a chance they'll get locked out, at least eventually.

If you signed in to Netflix from a device that's not part of your Netflix Household, you may need to verify your device to watch Netflix. To fix the issue you can: Create an account. Update your Netflix Household.

For travelers using Netflix away from their home address, they may encounter the message, "Your TV isn't part of the Netflix Household for this account." In such cases, select the option "I'm traveling," and you will receive a code allowing you to use your Netflix account beyond your primary household location.
