The Personal and Professional Development Award allow you to play a key part in your own development and demonstrate important transferable skills. These awards can be gained at work or through a variety of structured activities.

The Award in Personal and Professional Development are ideal for those in higher education institutions, students on Level 4 programmes (or higher) within further education colleges, employees engaged in continuing professional development programmes, and volunteers involved in professionally-structured and supported programmes.

General Information

What Is Involved In Studying This Course?

The Award in Personal and Professional Development must be based on a real development project (either through paid work or a volunteering/placement opportunity). They require you to carry out a self-audit, set your goals, review your progress, and then complete an evaluation.

The Professional Development Award can be completed at work, on a work placement or by volunteering.

You'll need to complete a development plan and a log/diary of your progress, supplemented by evidence of skills/knowledge gained, and an evaluation report (2000-3000 words).

What Careers Can This Lead To?

Personal and Professional Development Awards you can show employers that you have essential transferable skills and knowledge to achieve a wide range of career or educational leadership opportunities.

You could also choose to go on to a City & Guilds qualification related to your role or sector, anILMqualification or one of City & Guilds' Professional Recognition Awards, available at four levels:

  • Licentiateship (LCGI) comparable to Level 4
  • Affiliateship (AfCGI) comparable to Level 5
  • Graduateship (GCGI) comparable to Level 6
  • Membership (MCGI) comparable to Level 7.
What Is Involved With Delivering This Course?

To deliver theAward you will need suitably qualified/competent staff to support and assess learners completing the Professional Development Award.

You will also need suitable facilities to enable learners to complete their development project.

Please note these are unregulated qualifications (ie not on the National Qualifications Framework or Qualifications and Credit Framework) so they are not eligible for output-related funding within the learning and skills sector.

Level 4

ThePersonal and Professional Development Award is intended for learners on learning programmes at Level 4 or higher, or perhaps in a team leader or supervisory role at work.

In order to achieve a Professional Development Award it is necessary to:

  • carry out a self-audit
  • set goals
  • review progress on an on-going basis
  • carry out an evaluation following completion of the work placement or activity.
