What is the DMFT index for primary teeth? ›

DMF(T)/DMFS is calculated by adding up the number of permanent teeth affected by caries, where D is for decay, M is missing because of caries, and F is filled teeth (T) or surfaces (S). The term dmft was adopted to denote the caries index of deciduous teeth.

DMFT is the sum of the number of Decayed, Missing due to caries, and Filled Teeth in the permanent teeth. The mean number of DMFT is the sum of individual DMFT values divided by the sum of the population. The 12-year-old is one of the WHO indicator age groups.

All teeth with the exception of third molars are included, so for an adult, DMFT ranges from zero to 28, and DMFS ranges from zero to 128 with molars and premolars having 5 surfaces and incisors and canines having 4 surfaces. This index accounts for teeth that are restored and missing, and those teeth that are decayed.

The sum of the three figures forms the DMFT-value. For example: DMFT of 4-3-9=16 means that 4 teeth are decayed, 3 teeth are missing and 9 teeth have fillings. It also means that 12 teeth are intact. Note: If a tooth has both a caries lesion and a filling it is calculated as D only.

Calculating the Mean DMFT. You have a data set of individual DMFT values. Calculate the sum of all the DMFT values. Then, divide this sum by the total number of individuals to obtain the Mean DMFT (for comparison, the Mean DMFT is usually presented together with the SiC Index.
