CLEANING AND TROUBLESHOOTING YOUR WATERPIK® WATER FLOSSER

Using Mouthwash and Other Solutions
Your Waterpik® Water Flosser can be used to deliver mouthwash and antibacterial solutions. After using any special solution, rinse unit to prevent clogging by partially filling reservoir with warm water and running unit with tip pointed into sink until unit is empty.

Cleaning
Never immerse unit in water. Clean the product when necessary by using a soft cloth and mild non-abrasive cleanser to wipe exterior.
The water reservoir is removable for easy cleaning and is top rack dishwasher safe. It is recommended that the reservoir is removed and cleaned weekly.

Removing Hard Water Deposits / General Cleaning
Hard water deposits may build up in your unit, depending on the mineral content of your water. If left unattended, it can hinder performance. Cleaning internal parts: add 2 tablespoons of white vinegar to a full reservoir of warm water. Point the handle and tip into sink. Turn unit ON and run until reservoir is empty. FAQs

Can Waterpik cause gum recession? ›

No, water flossing does not cause gum recession nor damage to teeth or crowns. On the contrary, water flossing aids in flushing debris out of bridges, crowns, implants, braces, and other dental restoration better than brushing and flossing alone which can extend the lifespan of your dental restorations.

Can I put salt water in my Waterpik? ›

For a boost of antibacterial effects, add salt to the water flosser to help clean out gum pockets. For maximum effectiveness, use hydrogen peroxide or vinegar to clean the machine and tips between uses.

Can bacteria grow in Waterpik? ›

Because water flosser heads touch your mouth and stay wet, oral bacteria can grow on it. Even despite following the provided cleaning recommendations. That's not all, this study limited itself to studying only the nozzle, not the hose or water reservoir itself.

Can I put Listerine in my Waterpik? ›

Can I use mouthwash or other additives in a WATERPIK water flosser? Yes, although all you need for effectiveness is warm water, there are additives including certain types of mouthwash that are safe to use.

Can receding gums grow back? ›

The simple answer is, no. If your gums are damaged by, for example periodontitis, the most severe form of gum disease, it's not possible for receding gums to grow back. However, even though receding gums can't be reversed there are treatments that can help to stop the problem from getting worse.

What are the disadvantages of using a Waterpik? ›

The rinsing action of Waterpiks may not be enough to remove plaque completely from the surface of your teeth. Some people like to use string floss first to scrape off and loosen plaque. A Waterpik can then be used to efficiently rinse out residue and plaque left behind.

Is it safe to use tap water in a Waterpik? ›

It is not necessary to use distilled water. If you would brush your teeth with your tap water, then it is safe for your water flosser. Just make sure to clean the unit at least once a month (more often if you have hard water).

Do you brush your teeth before or after using a Waterpik? ›

The ideal time to use a Waterpik is before you brush your teeth. This is because doing so can allow you to remove food debris and plaque. When you use a Waterpik before brushing your teeth, teeth brushing becomes more effective.

Can Waterpik push bacteria deeper? ›

Specifically, the device does not push bacteria into the pocket, but can significantly remove the bacteria, improving the clinical signs of inflammation. There is no evidence of detrimental effects on the attachment or junctional epithelium; and, in some cases, a reduction in the pocket depth has been reported.

Should I floss or brush first? ›

Recent research suggests flossing before brushing your teeth is the way to go. This approach is superior for eliminating dental plaque on tooth surfaces and boosts the fluoride concentration in your mouth. Flossing before brushing helps strengthen your tooth enamel, making it more resistant to decay.

Do I still need to floss if I use a Waterpik? ›

Waterpiks can't remove plaque or stuck-on debris, so it's important to continue to floss and receive professional cleanings regularly. Using a Waterpik while continuing to practice good oral care can help you to keep your teeth and gums as healthy as possible.

Can you add anything to water in Waterpik? ›

We recommend using warm water. Water alone is proven highly effective in numerous clinical studies. However, patients can use certain agents with the water flosser: Mouthwash - A small amount of mouthwash such as TheraBreath Oral Rinse can be added to the water for flavoring and/or to enhance compliance.

What speeds up gum recession? ›

Your gums may recede for a number of reasons. Gum recession causes include: Brushing too hard or too aggressively. Dental plaque or tartar buildup.

How do you reverse gum recession? ›

Yes, surgical procedures are available to reverse recession. This procedure can include grafting gum tissue or bone in the affected areas. There are also changes you can make at home to keep the problem from reoccurring: If tobacco products are causing gums to recede, stop using tobacco and find a healthy substitute.

Can you reverse deep gum pockets? ›

Periodontal pockets are a symptom of periodontitis (gum disease), a serious oral infection. Periodontal pockets can be treated and reversed with good oral hygiene or with dental treatment. But when left untreated, periodontal pockets can lead to tooth loss.

Can massaging your gums reduce gum recession? ›

The presence of more oxygen in the gum tissue can also help kill anaerobic bacteria. You can prevent tooth loss and receding gum lines by massaging your gums on a regular basis and increasing blood flow to the gum tissue.
