LOS ANGELES, CA - Do you know someone with green eyes? You may find their irises beautiful, or even hypnotic, but it turns out that they are even more special than we thought. It’s estimated that only 2 percent of the world’s population have green eyes.
But “green” isn’t actually a pigment that ever occurs in human eyes. Ever wonder why the sky looks blue? It’s the result of the “Rayleigh scattering”- or the way light is reflected by the air.
Two things determine the appearance of emerald eyes: a low concentration of melanin, which makes them light amber, and the blue-ish effect of Rayleigh scattering in the iris.
If eyes are the windows to our souls, then iris color is window to our personalities. The genes that determine eye color are tied to the same genes that form the frontal lobe of our brains- so researchers believe that people with similar eye colors share similar traits.
People with green eyes are said to be intelligent, creative, alluring, and mysterious. They’re also known for being patient- which is good, because we could get lost in their eyes for hours.
It’s not hard to see why green eyes are the most coveted color, too.
In reality, everyone’s eyes are unique, like snowflakes, but this shade is the rarest of all. It’s no wonder everyone’s green with envy.
