Expert reveals why you should always look into someone's left eye (2024)

A neuroscientist has revealed an important tool she says is 'great for dating' - involving looking into someone's left eye when talking to them. Dr Tara Swart recently made an appearance on the popular Diary of a CEO podcast by Steven Bartlett to talk about stress and the power of the mind.

At the beginning of the chat the pair spoke about creating bonds and the tricks she'd recommend for people looking to make connections. Speaking to the entrepreneur, Dr Swart spoke about the use of eye contact - especially when it comes to the left eye.

In the pod, Dr Swart explained that looking at someone's left eye plays a vital role in bonding and creating emotional connections and has roots to back when we were babies.

Dr Swart started off her explanation by describing how when a baby is born, the one way it learns what emotions are is through eye contact with their mother. Dr Swart goes on to say that due to most people being right handed, they would hold their children with their left hand to keep their dominant hand free, thus when gazing at their child it would be their right eye staring into the left eye of the child.

She says that these interactions would go on to impact the amygdala, the part of your brain that is responsible for processing emotions, creating an 'emotional resonance loop'.

Speaking to Bartlett, Dr Swart said: "So, most people are right handed so they'll be holding their baby in their left arm so they can use their dominant hand to do stuff.

"So when you gaze at your baby, your right eye is looking at their left eye and then as that interaction from the optic nerve is going around the brain it's impacting the amygdala where emotions come from, and it's creating this emotional resonance loop that's part of how the mother and baby bond so that right eye to left eye contact is the most bonding eye contact you can have with someone.

"If I'm trying to build a bond with someone that's the statistically most likely one to create good resonance between you."

Wowed by her thesis, Bartlett asks if Dr Swart if she has been looking at his left eye from the moment she waked in the room to which she laughs at. Dr Swart explains that while she had waited for them to sit down before she began the process, the hugs and jokes they shared beforehand helped lower Bartlett's guard and work towards bonding.

Dr Swart also highlighted other tips for people to create emotional bonds. The brain expert pointed out appropriate physical like handshakes, hugs, or kisses on the cheek and laughing with someone as ways to create a sense of bonding and trust.
