There are many facts about eyelashes that are known to each and every one of us. Being in the eyelash extension industry, many topics were brought up by our students and we have decided to put out the top 10 most interesting eyelash facts for your enjoyment.

  • Just like all other tissues in our body, our lashes continuously change – the old ones fall out with new ones taking their place. In general, the lifespan of each eyelash is about 3 months. Eyelashes are considered the thickest and toughest of all hairs on the human body.
  • As far as the length and quantity of eyelashes they all vary from person to person. On average, each human eye contains anywhere between 150 – 250 individual lashes on the top eyelid and between 50-100 on the bottom. Eyelashes do not grow in even lines, rather in uneven rows: anywhere from 5-6 rows on the top eyelid and 3-5 rows on the bottom
  • As you have already known, the top eyelashes are always longer than the bottom ones. The lashes on the top eyelid are usually between 7-13mm in length while the lashes on the bottom usually never grow longer than 7mm.
  • Generally, the length, curl, and thickness of your eyelashes is genetic. That does not mean that any defects are irreparable. With proper care, many deficiencies can be corrected to your liking.
  • Regular intake of over the counter medications such as Aspirin and Ibuprofen can slow down the growth rate of your lashes as well as hair in general.
  • The color of your eyelashes, just as your hair, greatly depends on the amount of melanin pigment they contain. The larger the amount of melanin the eyelash contains, the darker the color (and vice versa). In most people, the color of their eyelashes and the color of their hair is generally very similar usually does not vary by more than a few shades. Considering the hormone levels change as we age, the eyelashes can darken in color as well.
  • Our eyelashes begin forming while still in the womb approximately on the 20th week of pregnancy.

In fact, most people do not realize that our lashes require regular washing and conditioning, just like our hair. When not properly cared for, eyelashes could become damaged, develop various diseases and experience higher than normal shedding.
